Max Hagan Pope Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Max Hagan Pope August 28, 1939 - June 17, 2022 Max was born in Carrabelle, Florida to Louise Hagan Pope and John D. Pope. He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife, Frances Draughon Pope, and son David Pope. He is survived by his daughter, Tracy Phillips (James), grandchildren James V, Sarah, Lori Pope (Harry), Erica Kursman (Matthew), and great grandchildren Luke Hayes, Lilly Hayes and Cosmo Kursman. During his life, he worked in the pulpwood, construction, and dairy industries. He founded his own business in Okeechobee, Pope’s Welding, “The Gate Place.” In addition to gates, he manufactured portable shade sheds, and installed many pieces of custom made equipment for local dairies. Max’ happiest times were spent hunting, fishing, and camping. He and his buddies spent many seasons building hunting buggies and running the deer in the Everglades. He enjoyed gigging fish (with the aid of airplane landing lights). Max loved popping open oysters around a fire with the Lake Placid Crew. Max was incredibly proud of the time he spent in the Marines. He loved telling about his experiences at Camp Lejeune. He always found friendship with his brothers in arms. Many will remember Max as one of the “Arby’s Bunch”. He would still be there too, except much to his chagrin, they stopped serving breakfast! Max was a believer in Christ. He wrote a poem to express his belief: Your First Breath Your last breath in this world is followed by the first breath in eternity; And when you say goodnight here, you say good morning there. When the darkness of night comes here, the eternal light shines there. Cold winds are blowing here, the warm summer breeze flows there. The darkness of despair comes upon you here, The bright feeling of hope and love covers you there. When the hate of your brothers overcomes you here, the never ending love of your Father will lift you up. Until your last heart beat here, sickness and pain will always be with you. When you take your first breath there, sickness and pain will never be known. The family will announce a date for a graveside memorial service.
